CAE Essay Answer With My Comments

Nowadays, many facilities could use money from local authorities. There are people who claim that cultural institutions should receive more money than other facilities. But (when I was in school my teachers used to tell me “never start a sentence with ‘and’ or ‘but’) which ones should receive more investment is opened to debate.

On the one hand, museums should be the institutions that need to receive a lot of money because people have lost the interest in visiting and promoting them. In a world where true values are not respected as they should be, it is important to remember what really matters (expand or give examples/reasons for this statement). Moreover, the young multitude (we normally say ‘the multitude of young people’) should be aware of the importance of knowing basic things in different domains. For example, science and history museums provide people with very interesting information. Therefore, in order to have well-informed teenagers, the local authorities should give money to museums. With that money, it can be organized events like (“such as” is a bit more of a formal expression) the day of open museums open days can be organized.

On the other hand, public gardens should also receive money from local authorities. Mainly because in big cities, where the air is very polluted, trees can absorb many of the gases produced leading to a much healthier environment. Furthermore, there can be built spaces for kids (“children” is better here, “kids” is too informal for an essay) to play can be built and also running tracks for people who cannot afford to go to the gym. It is important for people to keep doing exercises in the open air and in my opinion, parks are the best place for these.

All in all (this is slightly informal, “on the whole” would be better), as far as I am concerned the most important facility that should receive investment from local authorities are the museums. (State the most important reason for this opinion again here).

Content

4

Most of the content is relevant to the task and the target reader is informed. The paragraph focussed on museums could be made slightly stronger or shorter in order to give more strength to the argument or to allow for a stronger conclusion.

Communicative Achievement

3

The arguments are expressed quite clearly and the register is consistent even if slightly informal. There are some appropriate phrases used to introduce ideas ‘on the one hand’ and language of opinion ‘as far as I am concerned’ and explanation ‘in order to...local authorities should…’ is used to communicate straightforward ideas. An attempt is made to express a complex idea, true values are not respected as they should be’  but this lacks support.

Organisation

4

This writing is well organised to show a balanced argument and the views and ideas are expressed in a straightforward manner. The main ideas are introduced clearly and it is easy to see their purpose and intent. “On the one hand”, “all in all”.

Language

2

A range of vocabulary is used, including good linking words: “furthermore”, however the language used is also too informal for an essay at times, with phrases such as ‘all in all’ and ‘kids’.

There is a range of simple and more complex grammatical forms used, including the passive and while these are not always correct, they do not impede communication.

The language does not always support the content or main ideas, for example: “true values are not respected as they should be”.

CAE Essay Pass or Fail

If we add up the marks on the examiner's assessment scale, we can see this student got 4 + 3 + 4 + 2 = 13/20.

If the student got 13 in part 2 of the C1 Writing paper, he would get 26/40.

This would be a C1 pass mark for this exam paper.

If you want to learn more about the pass marks for each exam paper, check out page 5 in this document. You need approximately 60% average across all 5 papers to pass the exam.

Homework - Read This CAE Essay Question

You must answer this question. Write your answer in 220-260 words in an appropriate style.

You attended a school talk about reading different kinds of books and how important this is. You made these notes:

What books are important to read

-fiction

-history

-science

Here are some of the opinions from the talk:

‘Fiction can help your relationships by gaining a better understanding of others’
‘You can find all the history you want on the internet’
‘Science is very important but it is not easy to follow most scientific papers’

Write an essay discussing two of the points in your notes. Explain what you think is the most important type of book to read. Give reasons for your answer.

Use the opinions above if you wish.

Nowadays we frequently attend to talks which refers to how important is to choose a category when reading books. How can we demonstrate the benefits of them? In this essay I will discuss two approaches that I collected from the last school talk I attended which could help to persuade teenagers to consider further readings in this area.

One possible approach would be to focus on fiction books that could
provide them with insights to understand each other. While this would be fairly easy to implement superficially, a lot of information could be generated extremely quickly. In addition, generally speaking, every relationship is particular and therefore may not be able to connect with each other in a genuine way.

A second approach based on science books would invite readers to come up with the idea to give a talk at the school. What might prove difficult would be to secure the information provided, as many speakers spotted that was difficult to understand scientific papers. It would be crucial to align their knowledge with experts or they might actually have an adverse effect.

Overall, I would say that the most effective category would be fiction. Bearing in mind how empathic it could be to have an exciting story from the field is much more likely to influence in teenagers choice than some scientific second-hand talks.

Homework - Read My Comments On The Essay Answer

Nowadays we frequently attend to talks which refers to how important it is to choose a category when reading books. How can we demonstrate the benefits of them ‘reading different genres of books’? In this essay I will discuss two approaches that I collected from the last school talk I attended, which could help to persuade teenagers to consider further readings in this area (this sentence could be tied more closely to ‘what you think is the most important type of book to read’).

One possible approach would be to focus on fiction books that could

provide them with insights ‘on how’ to ‘better’ understand each other. While this would be fairly easy to implement these findings’ superficially, a lot of information could be generated extremely quickly (I don’t understand the last part of this sentence, can you be more specific?). In addition, generally speaking, every relationship is particular and therefore ‘it could be argued that people’ may not be able to connect with each other in a genuine way.

A second approach based on science books would invite readers to come up with the idea to give a talk at the school. What might prove difficult would be to secure the information provided, as many speakers spotted that ‘it’ was difficult to understand scientific papers.  It would be crucial to align their knowledge with experts or they might actually have an adverse effect.

Overall, I would say that the most effective category would be fiction. Bearing in mind how empathic it could be to have an exciting story from this field, ‘it’ is much more likely to influence in teenagers choices than some scientific second-hand talks.

The content focusses on persuading teenagers to read more but it would be better aimed at which is the most important type of book to read.

Communicative Achievement

2

The arguments you are trying to put forward are clear but unfortunately they do not address the question what you think is the most important type of book to read’. The expressions ‘one possible approach’ and ‘a second approach’ are good to use in an essay, but they do not address the question. The overall structure and the development of your arguments during the paragraphs is good.

Organisation

3

The organisation of the essay is clear with 4 strong paragraphs, including introduction and conclusion. There is also clear structure within the paragraphs with opening statements which are followed up with qualifying phrases ‘What might prove difficult’, ‘it would be crucial to...’

Language

You have used some good language and expressions, for example ‘One possible approach’, ‘a second approach’ but these are not always closely connected to the content of the question.

Homework Answer - Pass or Fail

I have given this student a total of 10 out of 20 marks. This mark is calculated by adding up the individuals scores in the marking criteria:

Content: 2

Communicative Achievement: 2

Organisation: 3

Language: 3

2 + 2 + 3 + 3 = 10/20.

If you get 10 in part 1,  you need to get 14 in part 2 in order to pass the C1 Writing paper.

You do not need to pass every exam paper, but you do need circa 60% across all 5 papers to pass the Cambridge C1 Advanced.

What mark did you give this essay? You should follow the homework steps on this page with more examples. If you do this, it won't take long until you know how to write a CAE essay that examiners will love! I mean really love! Love love love...
